Right now, Down Under may be the pick of the day for backpackers from the world over, but visiting Australia for a sustained period of time as part of your studies is a completely different experience, and is definitely not best lived out of a rucksack.
When deciding what you want out of your time in Oz, you’ll need to think seriously about location; there’s a very definite East Coast- West Coast split here, which could affect your ability to see more of Australia’s cities or the famed outback should you wish to add some travelling to your time abroad.
As it’s part of the Commonwealth, there are slightly different visa and work permit regulations if you’re looking for a job than if you were heading to another non-EU nation. If you’re undertaking a work placement, your employer should help you get by all this, but make sure you’re aware of the rules too. Chances are, however, that you’ve been offered a study place at a university with which your home institution already has well-established links.
