Years Abroad in Belgium
-
“There’s nothing boring about the Belgians - their capital is one of Europe’s funkiest, with a constant stream of new bars, clubs, boutiques and restaurants.”- John Brunton
Belgium has a lot more to offer as a Year Abroad destination than just lace, chocolate and mussels. From the stunning architecture in Antwerp, the fantastic flea markets in Brussels to the romantic city of Bruges, there really is something for everyone. The country is rich with culture: world-class art, picture-perfect castles and impressive museums. It is a place of the divine (just wait until you try the fruit beer, Kriek!) and the divided (the Flemish north and Walloon south).
So, what are the options for your Year Abroad in Belgium?
The British Council offer teaching placements in seven locations in French-speaking Wallonia; assistantships last nine months.
Many Belgian universities participate in the ERASMUS exchange scheme. Popular choices are Antwerp, Leuven, Brussels and Ghent. However, do not be discouraged from choosing a less well known university such as Liege, you may find settling in and conversing with locals is easier there.
If you’re hoping for a work placement in politics, Brussels is probably your place. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet influential people who may help you to find related work after graduation. MEPs often offer shadowing schemes.
Your university department should be able to give you information about varied work placements all over Belgium. For your language, au pairing may be a good option as it offers complete immersion in a host family. The European Voluntary Service funds projects in many locations across the country (their selection process is lengthy so apply well in advance).
