Years Abroad in Spain

  • Contrary to its image as a popular summer holiday destination, Spain has far more to offer than the sun, sand and sangria of the Costa del Sol. With a fascinating history and a great deal of geographical and cultural diversity across the 17 Comunidades Autónomas, a year in Spain can be an exciting and varied experience. From the historical remains of Islamic rule in Andalusia to the vibrant and modern atmosphere of Barcelona, and from the mountains of the Sierra Nevada to the famed Mediterranean coastline, there really is something to suit all tastes and interests.

A Year Abroad in Spain has broadly the same range of options as other European countries. The British Council organises placements as language assistants in all 17 of the Comunidades Autónomas, as well as a limited number in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the North African coast. Most posts are in secondary schools, although some regions offer places in primary schools also. It is worth noting that in some areas (particularly in Catalonia) Spanish might not always be the main language spoken! It is always a good idea to do a bit of research into the area you want to go to before applying for anything.

Most Spanish universities partake in the ERASMUS scheme. Places available depend on the agreements between particular universities, but there are many good universities scattered across different parts of the country, such as Granada, Madrid, Barcelona and the popular university city of Salamanca.

There are also plenty of work opportunities available, with some organisations actively seeking out undergraduates by contacting university departments.
