Ahh… Melbourne. The perfect blend of cosmopolitan, energetic, and artsy.
Whether you are traveling solo or as a couple, looking for a party hostel or a chill place to rest, there is always a place for you.
I’ve stayed in dozens upon dozens of hostels in my first few months here. Let’s take a look at some of my favourite hostels in Melbourne.
Best overall best hostel: Flinders Backpackers
Best hostel for couples: Space hotel
Best party hostel: Base St’Kilda
Best cheap hostel: Summer House Backpackers
Overall best hostel: Flinders Backpackers
If you like to stay in the city centre, are on a budget, and want to make friends then this is the place for you. It is the perfect blend of relax and social. There is a bar downstairs (where you get discount if you stay at the hostel) The common areas are clean, spacious and you get free pancakes every morning. (:
- Free breakfast
- Movie room, pool table
- Downstairs bar
- Social common area so it’s easy to meet people
- Right in the city centre
Best hostel for couples: Space Hotel
The name might suggest that it is a hotel, but it is not. It’s quite a ‘luxurious’ budget hostel. They have dorms, private rooms, and private rooms with a balcony. The amenities are really good for the price. They have a gym, movie room, the best hotels kitchen I’ve ever seen and a rooftop. The rooftop is a-ma-zing. With a skyline view over the city and a jacuzzi this has to be one of my favourite hostels in Melbourne. Though. Not as social.
- Amenities are very clean
- Airconditioner
- Jacuzzi on the rooftop with a skyline view over Melbourne
- Movie room and a gym
- Right in the city centre
Best party hostel: Base St’kilda
If you like foam parties, karaoke or just parties in general. This is your place. Although it’s quite far from the CBD. It is right by the beach in St. Kilda. They host activities every single day and the common area is really social. Which makes it easy to meet new people.
The dorm rooms are quite cramped, but still comfortable enough. Every dorm has en-suite bathrooms. There is also a kitchen but it isn’t huge (no ovens). The Wi-Fi works best in the common room, but it’s not great in the dorms. If you need decent Wi-Fi, head out to one of the cafes to use theirs instead.
This hostel is great if you want to hang out and party by the beach. You can take public transit into the CBD, which is easy to do and takes around 30 minutes.
- On-site bar
- Social common area so it’s easy to meet people
- Airconditioner
- Right by the beach
Best cheap hostel: Summer House Backpackers
Onsite rooftop bar, walking distance from the beach, live music, comedy acts and cheap drinks. Summer House Backpackers is one of my favourite hostels and in St Kilda. It takes around 30 minutes to get to CBD from here. The hostel itself is not noisy at all (so, a good night of sleep!). Head upstairs for the rooftop bar or downstairs for the pub to make friends and meet mind liked travellers.
- On-site rooftop bar
- Really cheap drinks from the pub downstairs
- Right by the beach
I love to stay in hostels. They add character to your experience and make it easy to meet other travelers. If you want to make the most out of your time in Melbourne, be sure to stay at any of the hostels above. You won’t be disappointed.
