How to explore Byron Bay on a budget

This hippie surf town is a well-known backpackers destination in the far north-east of New South Wales, Australia. It is known for its beaches, live music and relaxed atmosphere. After spending 5 months in this beach heaven, I’ve added some insider tips to help you experience Byron Bay’s beauty on a budget!

How to explore Byron bay on a budget.

If you’re planning on backpacking – or just on a budget – here are my top tips for enjoying the bay on a budget

Stay in a hostel or campsite

Go to a cute hostel or set up camp surrounded by nature. You’ll meet fellow travelers, and get to really experience Byron Bay. It is known for its ”laid-back atmosphere.”   ‘Arts Factory Lodge‘ is where it all began. Back in the ’70s, artists and free spirits turned this into a safe space for creativity. They still host weekly talent shows and trivia nights.

Watch the sunrise and do the lighthouse walk

This hike is so cute and easy. Most people do the lighthouse walk via the most eastern point of Australia. My insider tip is to start from Wategos beach, via Little Wategos beach (a beautiful and quiet spot) to the lighthouse. 🙂

Visit one of their amazing beaches

Byron Bay has gorgeous beaches with turquoise waters and golden sands. Spend your days sunbathing, leisurely wandering, and perhaps even trying some beachside yoga

Go on one of the many hikes

Put on your shoes (or not – going barefoot works too) and explore Byron.

Learn how to surf

Byron Bay is a surfer paradise. Why not try to learn how to surf? I’d either recommend renting a surfboard for around 10 dollar or booking a surf class! I went with ‘Let’s Go Surfing.‘ They also took some photos of us 😉
