Top 5 Christmas Markets in Europe You Can’t Miss – Insider Tips from a Local

Since I was a child, I have visited many Christmas markets across Europe. Living in the Netherlands—where Christmas markets aren’t quite as elaborate—I often head out to other countries to get the full Christmas market experience. Here are my top five you have to add to your holiday travel list!

1. Cologne Christmas Market (Germany)

  • You’ll love it if: It is your first time looking for a classic german Christmas market experience
  • Must-do: Drinking Gluhwein and keeping your mug!

Germany is one of the best countries to go to for Christmas markets. There are several good one, but I recommend the christmas market in Cologne. There are multiple markets spread around the city, but the best one is in front of the Cathedral. Expect Gluhwein, music, bratwurst and lots of beer! The Cologne Christmas markets 2024 run from 18 November to 23 December.

2. Vienna Christmas markets (Austria)

  • You’ll love it if: You love history and culture and are looking to mix your Christmas marketing experience with visiting museums and palaces
  • Must-do: Krapfen (a jam-filled donut that’s especially popular during the holiday season).

Vienna is magical year-round, but there’s something extraordinary about the city in December. The main markets are in Rathausplatz, with over 100 festive stalls selling handcrafted ornaments, spiced pastries, and, of course, mulled wine. If you have time, visit the Schönbrunn Palace market, where you can enjoy the market stalls with the grand palace behind you. It’s the perfect market to combine with a cultural tour of Vienna’s rich history. The Vienna Christmas Markets run from 18 November till 6 January, with exact dates varying by location.

3. Prague Christmas Markets (Czech Republic)

Prague’s Old Town Square already feels like something out of a fantasy, and the Christmas market just adds to it. Medieval buildings, Gothic towers, a giant Christmas tree, and wooden stalls full of Czech holiday treats and handmade goodies. If you love classic, cozy holiday atmosphere, you won’t want to miss this. It’s romantic, festive, and full-on magical—Prague is a must. The Prague Christmas Markets 2024 run from 30 November till 6 January 2025.

  • Must-do: Don’t leave without trying pain d’épices (gingerbread) and a glass of local Alsatian wine.

Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg’s market is one of the oldest in Europe and has a mix of French and German influences that make it unique. The main market at Place Kléber has a massive Christmas tree, incredible food stalls, and a atmosphere that feels both cozy and festive.
