Traveling on the Cheap: A Guide

Okay, let’s be real for a second. I know that the number 1 most common reason people don’t travel is finance-related. How many times have you heard people say that all they want to do is quit their jobs and travel the world?

Did you know there are plenty of ways to travel on a budget, or even for free. You just need to be willing to get creative.

Traveling the world with no money sounds like an unrealistic dream. But it is possible. It should be said that there are some expenses you shouldn’t compromise on, but there are tons of ways you can travel the world on a budget — including plenty of ways you can actually travel for free.

Traveling cheap is all about taking advantage of helpful apps and websites that save you money, finding ways to lower your expenses, and even making money as you travel. It’s about finding value and lowering your expenses while still being able to afford to do what you want.

Traveling for free comes with taking advantage of free accommodation, transportation, and activities that are already out there, thereby reducing your cost to zero. With the right budget and the right mindset, you can make your travel dreams a reality. Even if you don’t earn a lot there are still plenty of ways to go overseas. They may not be fancy or luxurious, but if travel is your priority then you can definitely make it happen!

Get a job overseas

There are so many opportunities in the world, as long as you’re willing to do them. They tend to be not the most exciting jobs, but remember. It’s just a way to earn money for travel.

Waitress/waiter There are tons of seasonal restaurants around the world that need extra help during tourist months. If you have experience, this is a easy job to find abroad.

Au Pair – If you love working with children this is the perfect job for you. As an au pair you are a live-in caregiver who helps a family by looking after their children and doing some basic chores. In exchange, you get a free room, free food and a small salary. This is amazing if you’re looking for a cultural exchange and improving a foreign language

Working on a farm – If you don’t mind hard work this is a great way to make money in a short amount of time. They often come with accommodation and tend to be in rural locations, so you won’t have anywhere to spend your money on. This job is very popular in Australia and New Zealand

Seasonal worker at a ski resort or campsite – Instructors, restaurant staff, hotel staff, lifeguards — ski resorts need all sorts of staff to keep things moving, making this a goldmine for the overseas traveler.

Yacht worker – While the hours can be long, you can make great money working for the rich and famous on their yachts. Best of all, you’re usually in some pretty amazing destinations!

Yoga instructor – If you have the skills (and certification), teaching yoga abroad is an easy way to make some spending money. While you might need to know the language, there are yoga studios in pretty much every city in the world.

Dive instructor – If you want to become a diver you can join a ”Divemaster internship.” You’ll learn on the job and get to dive for free!

Tour guide – If you’ve got a knack for history and don’t mind speaking in front of groups, this is the perfect job for you. It’s also usually a cash job, which means you get your tips directly.

Work on a cruise ship – This is a much more formal position than the ones above, but it’s a great way to travel. The hours are long, but there’s something to be said about living at sea!

Teach english overseas

There are SO many different opportunities that include language learning. You can get a job, do a cultural exchange and volunteer!

WWOOFing.

Ever dreamed of living out your best cottagecore life while learning about organic farming? WWOOFing is your answer. You get to be in beautiful nature while exploring the local culture. I hope I get to do this cultural exchange soon!

Cook your own meals

Whenever I go to different counties, I love to visit the local supermarkets. I get to really feel like a local. It also helps that one of the best ways to save your money is to make your own food! Plus, communal cooking in hostels is a amazing way to meet fellow travelers.

Get rail passes

If you are from the EU you can get a interrail ticket. This ticket works on all trains within Europe, and you might be able to save ALOT of money! If you’re not from the EU, you can get a eurrail pass instead 😉

Sleep in large dorm rooms

Opting for larger dorm rooms might not be the dream, but it’s a small compromise for bigger adventures. Get some earplugs and an eye mask and you’re all set. (ps: I do always recommend staying in a female only dorm if you can)

Use students and other discount cards

If you’re a student do not forget to take it with you! From museums and galleries to transport and meals, showing your student ID might give you discount. And if you’re not a student? Look into other discount cards or programs that might apply to you; there are plenty of programs that are a quick search away.

Hitchhike

A way to get from A to B for free is to hitchhike. It is quite a popular thing to do in Australia.

Take free walking tours

Most cities offer free walking tours. I did one in Prague and it was one of my highlights! They work on commission and do expect a tip after, but you can decide how much you want to give.

House sitting and pet sitting

If you love animals this is def a win-win: you get free accommodation, and the landlords get peace of mind. Check out sites like TrustedHousesitters to find places to house sit at.

Use your own social circle

You do not know until you ask… go ask your friends and family, and who knows?
