A Year Down Under: Living abroad in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa

After what felt like an eternity of lockdowns and travel restrictions, I decided to go to Australia on a Working Holiday visa. A chance to explore a new continent, meet new people, and figure out a bit about myself and what I wanted from life.

The Australian East Coast became my new home; from the artsy Melbourne with its endless coffee shops and street art, to the laid-back surf town in Byron Bay, and the stunning oldest Rainforest in the world. Each place had its charm, but a few spots really captured my heart.

Melbourne

After a long plane journey of 24 hours I landed in Melbourne. The first place in Australia I set my foot into. When I first walked into the city with my huge backpack I noticed all the massive buildings in the city. It is a vibrant cultural city with a lot of artsy shops (which I love.)

Byron Bay

In Byron Bay, life slowed down. I lived in a bungalow right next from the beach, where the days gently rolled from one into the next. Working in the morning, going to the beach after. Life was chil andplace that felt like a long, warm summer that never ended. After 5 months of living here I know the best tips on How to exlore Byron Bay on a budget.

The Daintree Rainforest

Imagine waking up in the middle of the oldest rainforest in the world, surrounded by the most unique flora and fauna you’ve ever seen. The Daintree was a living museum, a reminder of what the world looked like millions of years ago. Living there, even for a short while, was nothing short of magical. I saw breathing mushrooms, crocodiles, cassowaries, frogs, possums, wallabies and many other animals.

Working My Way Through the Coast

I hopped from one job to another, mainly working seasonal hospitality roles at various resorts. Jobs were plentiful as the country reopened post-COVID, and the work itself was as diverse as the landscapes I explored. By the end of my stay, finding work became a bit harder.

One Regret

If I could do it all over again, I’d definitely buy a car. Not having one limited my ability to explore some of the more hidden gems of Australia at my own pace. We rented cars which costed a lot of money and it was not as flexible. Having the freedom a car is something I wish I had considered more seriously.

Life Lessons

The most memorable part wasn’t just the places I saw, but the insights I gained about myself. Living abroad taught me about independence, resilience, and the sheer joy of discovering new places. I’m still piecing together what I want for my future, but I now know it includes more adventures.

For those wanting to go abroad

Thinking of getting a Working Holiday in Australia? Go for it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that could shape your views on work, life, and everything in between. Just remember to pack light, stay open to new experiences, and always be ready for the next adventure.
